Bike Skills and Safety Procedures

J.S.from Bigfoot came to room 10 to teach us about bike skills. He began by teaching us some safety precautions around bike riding.
Some of the skills he taught us were to check your brakes, wheels, bolts and reflectors before you ride your bike. You can wear reflective gear and use reflective tape. If you don’t have these equipment then you can use slap bands.  You have to wear visible clothing so you can stand out at night. You can wear  a bright  coloured t-shirt during day time. The last thing you have to check is your helmet for cracks. J.S. said if you have a bike crash you can be seriously injured.

Big Foot's Bike Safety Theory and Practice Lesson

A gentleman from Bigfoot called J.S came to our school and taught a theory lesson on bike safety. The first thing we learned about was what you have to wear to keep yourself safe. We started from bottom upwards. First we looked at our feet, the best thing to wear on your feet is closed shoes, always remember to triple loop or double loop your laces, then tuck them in your shoes. Next we looked at what kind of clothing we should wear on our legs. J.S asked us “What would you wear when cycling?” “Shorts, nothing baggy, no skirts or nothing loose or tight.” we replied. Next we looked at our upper body, near our chest. The best thing to wear on your upper body is a bright coloured t-shirt, reflective gear so you can stand out to motorists. Slap bands are also good gear for safety we learnt.

Next we looked at the bike he brought in. The first thing on the bike we looked at were the brakes. The main thing about brakes is to make sure they work. To check them just push your bike a little forward then hit your right brake for the front wheel, if your back wheel flies up then your front wheel works. To check the back wheel brake, pull your bike back and hit your left brake, if your front wheel comes up then it works. We moved on to the wheels next. The main point about your wheels is the tread. Treads help with the grip on your wheel. If the tread on your wheels are smooth then it probably is good to get new wheels. There are two more points on your bike wheels that you should be aware of. Always check your spokes. If your spokes are wobbly then its best to take your bike to the bike shop to be repaired. The last point was the bolts. Always make sure the bolts on your bike are tight so your wheels don't fall off. Through the session we carried onto the quick release lever. We learnt that we should always make sure the quick release lever is on close not open. If it is on open then your wheel will rattle and fall off.

Finally we were up to our helmet. J.S showed us about how to fit our helmet and adjust it correctly. An important lesson we all learnt at the session is that the helmet is a very strong protector of your head. I personally think that too.

Later on we had a practical lesson on bike safety and rode our bikes safely using all the knowledge we gained at the theory lesson session. We are now more aware of how to bike safely.

Our Soccer session with Ben

Hooray! Today was another lesson of football with Ben. For warm up we had a race. Then we started our lesson. He taught us how to dribble the soccer ball and how to do the scissors step. We practiced that for a while and then we went onto a game of football. It was the same teams, Outlaws vs Bulldogs. We only had five minutes of the game because some people took a long time to listen, so we just had a five minute game.

While the game was on everyone had really good kicks, and passes. The best kick was from our mate Jerome. We felt sad when we heard we only had 20 seconds left, then the time was up. Ben went over the juggling, dribbling and scissors skills again. I can’t wait till our lesson next week!!!

Soccer Fun!!

In our second soccer session with Ben, I learnt how to do the scissor kick, it was really easy when I got the hang of it. All we had to do is put the left leg over the soccer ball then the right, turn and dribble the ball away from the defender. But the main skill we were learning was how to dribble. After practising dribbling the ball, we played a game - it was kind of like soccer, but instead of having an open goal there are cones. When some one from the other team hits one of the cones they take it to their side, and the team with the most cones wins. We had a lot of fun during the session.
I can’t wait till our next session with Ben.

My Catapult

A launcher, you were!
A departure, you have been!
A toy artillery, you sure were!
you slinged, my toys everywhere
And got me into trouble every time,
But you still were my favourite toy
Catapult!

We had a soccer lesson with Ben the instructor from the Auckland Sports. First we started of with a game called octopus for our warm up. Then he showed us how to juggle the soccer ball with our legs. It was hard and fun at the same time.

Our soccer session 2 was equally fun and tiring.  We learnt to step with a soccer ball. We practiced the scissors step which is really a skilful stepping move. We also learnt to dribble the soccer ball and stop it with our foot. After that we were divided into two teams and  we played soccer for five minutes.

We learnt new soccer skills through the two sessions and feel more confident playing soccer.

Scoot Safely

Glenbrae students were lucky to have lessons about scoot skills. We learnt how to keep safe by looking for hazards and avoiding them. Hazards that we must look for are: sneaky driveways, bumps and potholes. Every time we cross the road we must look right and left.
I learnt a lot about how to scoot safely.

We Won Fair and Square!

Today we learnt some new soccer skills with Ben. First we had races and then got into to teams and played ball tag. We learnt to dribble the ball and do the scissors step with the ball. After learning how to dribble the ball, we had a soccer game. Our two teams were Outlaws and Bulldogs. We played well and my team won fair and square. We had a great session and we all felt good after so much fun.

Off we went on our bikes!

This morning J.S came to our class to teach us bike safety skills. The first thing he taught us was to wear bright coloured t-shirts to stand out and be visible on the road. On the road you can wear a vest with reflective tape on it. when you are riding your bike on the road you can wear reflective gear to be safe on the road, he said.

We learnt to do a bike check today. We checked if both the brakes worked. We checked if the spokes weren’t wiggly, the tread wasn’t worn out and the bolts were tight. We checked if the bike had reflective gear on it. The most important thing on your bike is that you have a red reflective light on the back of your seat so cars from far away can see you . We checked our bikes for this.

The last thing J.S talked to us about was  that you need to wear a helmet when you ride your bike. He told us that if your helmet is cracked you can’t use it again. We adjusted the helmets to the size of our heads and off we went on our bikes having learnt a lot. It was a great day.

Learning from the Tread Lightly Caravan

Today we went to the Tread Lightly caravan to learn about how to protect the Earth. We got into six groups. My groups first exhibit was the environmental footsteps. It had 22  questions  so we took turns answering them. The questions were about what you use in your house. We learnt about e-waste. There are three valuable metals.Copper Silver and Gold in computers. So we need to recycle them.

Next we used the magnifying glass and the microscope to look at tiny bugs and creatures that are useful to our planet Earth. We learnt that we should look after them.

We also learnt about the pollution in the air and about how we leave carbon footprints when we travel by air.

We need to respect and look after our precious planet.

The Amazing Lever!

Sat down on a see-saw
To see what I could see
Looked up to the sky to see who sat in front of me

As I looked across the handle
Smiled a kid
Wondering who’s going down first
So we waited

I could see the slide
I could see the sky
I could also see the treetops
I sat and wondered why.

Lonely

In the park It’s busy on the see-saw,
Long and strong lifting
Children balancing.
Fulcrum still standing
Holding this simple machine.
At night, sitting there all cold, wet and lonely
Is the see-saw
Waiting for excited children to return.
